SilentDrop lets you send files directly from one device to another. It aims to be private, fast, and simple — no accounts or sign‑ups. After both sides join a session, the two browsers establish a secure peer‑to‑peer connection using modern browser capabilities (conceptually via WebRTC) and transfer your files directly.
We never inspect your files. Transfers happen end‑to‑end between your devices. When a relay is needed (for example, behind some networks), the app will show a subtle hint about using a relay and a link‑quality badge so you always know what to expect.
How do I start a transfer?
On the receiving device, open Receive and share the session ID or QR. On the sending device, open Send, scan the QR (or paste the ID), then choose your files. Once connected, the transfer begins.
Is my data private?
Yes. Files are sent directly between devices over a secure connection (conceptually via WebRTC). We don’t require accounts, and the app avoids sending file contents to any server.
What if the connection is inconsistent?
Networks vary. If peers can’t connect directly, the app may use a relay path. You’ll see a link‑quality badge indicating direct, relayed, or unknown. Relayed connections are reliable but may be slower.
Can I pause or resume?
Yes. Sending supports pause, resume, and cancel per file. The receiver acknowledges progress so the sender can continue from where it left off during a session.
Does SilentDrop store my files?
SilentDrop is designed for direct device‑to‑device transfer. We don’t store your files in the cloud.
Need guaranteed delivery with cloud storage?
Check out our sister app, SilentShare — same clean UX but with cloud storage in the middle for 100% reliable delivery across devices, time zones, and flaky networks. It’s ideal when you can’t have both devices online at the same moment.
Is there a size limit?
There’s no fixed size limit enforced by the app; practical limits depend on your device and browser. For very large files or unstable links, SilentShare may be the better fit.
Does the receiver auto‑download files?
No. The receiver can preview progress and choose when to download or open files after they arrive.
What’s the safety phrase I see?
After connecting, both devices show a short phrase (emojis). If the phrases match on both devices, you can be confident you’re connected to the expected peer.
Why does it sometimes say “via relay (slower)”?
Some networks block direct peer connections. In those cases, a relay helps complete the transfer. It’s normal and keeps things working — just possibly slower.
SilentDrop is built by developers who care about practical privacy and delightful UX. The goal is to make file sharing feel effortless while giving you confidence in how your data flows between devices.
We focus on: fast onboarding (QR/ID), clear status, and sensible defaults. If you have ideas or find edge cases, we’d love to hear from you.
